Like Michelle, my dog pulls, only when he see's other people and other dogs. I don't really have a problem with this because i know i have to be consistent and patient and i don't mind being firm with him!! I was just wondering what is the best thing to walk him on? I have tried half choke collars, which are very good to be honest, i read a book that stated to put boxers on full chokers at 6 months which i did but i think they can be dangerous (you have to know how to use them), i have tried normal collars and now a harness. Can boxers be put on haulty's? if so what is the best thing to use?? Thanks alot

Hi Michelle, hi again David!

Pulling, I think we've talked about this issue a ways back perhaps.

I'm not really the best to give advice on it, Jason for example was terrible at pulling when young.

Once again the answer is training. I wish it wasn't but unfortunately most behavioural problems come down to that in the end.

When he's not actually around the distractions that cause this. Take time out (As David says you'll need patience.) to really reinforce that if he pulls at all it's not good.

You can do this by stopping every time he pulls and just staying still. Telling him as firmly as possible "No".

You can then use rewards, if he stays still without trying to pull for a reasonable period.

This tells him he's good when he's following your lead and bad when trying to take the initiative.

You can later advance this by getting a friend to do something distracting (play with a ball perhaps) nearby whilst practising the same technique.

As I always try and point out I'm no expert Michelle. So ask around for advice. :)

I reckon this advice can work well but like most methods of training it can take a long long time.

"Can boxers be put on haulty's? if so what is the best thing to use??"

What's a haulty David? I thought it was a kind of harness?

Hi Paul,

Basically a haltie is wrapped around the snout of the dog, (it looks like a muzzle but the lead is attached to it). It works best on dogs like german shepards, but as we know boxers have shorter muzzles so i was just wondering if they could work on them. Cheers Paul

Ah I see, thanks David!

I couldn't really imagine something like that on a boxer. As you say because they have short muzzles. Certainly I've never seen it used with boxers.

Course I don't really know if it would work at all. I'll maybe do a search online though. It'd be interesting to know about.

Hey David and Michelle! :)

Good call Michelle!

It's good to have some info on the halty David, but glad you tried it and not me. :D

When you say "raw" do you mean as in meat?

It's a long time since any dog of mine had any as a staple diet, so I couldn't really comment on the pluses or minuses.

They do very well on the dry food we their fed though.

On a side note for those of you who come back regularly (Which I know isn't many.) We very nearly switched to a small forum software, rather than this guest book like thing we have.

Had it all skinned similar to this and heard a new version will mean I have to patch up all the differences.

I like what I have here but unfortunately this little news system (Acting as a guest book.) has limits which we will approach eventually. Plus there's a lot of benefits like being able to post pictures.

Hopefully we'll make the transition sometime soon and hopefully it will be smooth. Don't know if I'll carry over all these postings though. As I'd need to manually transfer them one by one. If not I may keep this as an closed to comments archive.

Hi Paul

I mean as in the Barf diet? I feed Nutro and i always give him meat (chicken, tuna, cod) aswell as other things such bio yogurt vegies/fruit. I am quite pleased with his diet at the moment but i am very interested in Barf diet. I worry about feeding dry because of bloat!
And also Paul he is still on 3 meals per day however he does'nt seem to get that excited about his food any more - in your opinion does this mean i should cut down to 2 meals? (he is 9 months) Thanks alot Paul much appreciated
