Hello, I just found your site while looking for some health help for my boxer Bailey. He is 9 months and the light of my life. I am not sure I treated my children as well as I treat him. They are all grown now.

I am having a problem with Bailey getting bumps on his chin. They are hard and break open and bleed. I have had him to the vet for it when it happened the first time at 4 months. They said it was probably the plastic bowls he has. I switched to metal and make sure they stay super clean. The vet gave me an antibactorial cream and pills. Then it came back again a few days ago. Since he is old enough to have jowls now I have discovered the bumps are also in the folds of his lips and pop and bleed just like the ones on his chin. I have the same medicine again because the vet did not have to see him this time since it is the same thing. I am worried because even though the vet says it is common with boxers and the medicine will not hurt him every few months other boxer owners have told me they have never had this problem. It must be something more than plastic bowls. The vet had said it is a staph infection. Has anyone else had this problem and what can I do about it. He does not act like it hurts but it hurts me for him to be sick in any way. Help!!!

Hi Pat! :)

I've certainly had Boxers with what I'd call plooky or spotty chins, which on occasion did bleed. Never on their lips though as far as i can remember.

If it was just on the chin I'd be inclined to agree with your vet.

I'm not at all sure whether it's something to worried about or not Pat but I'd say trust your instincts and maybe seek out a 2nd opinion at another vets. It can't hurt if you can afford it just now. It might put your mind at rest if nothing else.

Also there's not many of us that post here regularly, it's a small site. So if you haven't already you could try asking at a bigger place like -

http://www.boxerworld.com

They have a huge forum there, with tons of people posting so maybe one of them knows something helpful.

Let me know how you and Bailey get on! :)

Hi Pat
Just read your item on your dogs spotty chin and I had the same problem with Buster when he was a youngster, he had a mass of spots under his chin and amonsgt his lips which bled quite a lot. We had him to the vets a few times and he said it is a form of acne. We tried tablets and a cream and we were even advised by the vet to go and buy a bottle of Hibby Scrub, which is the soap used by surgeons, all to no avail (and cosly too). The rememdy we discovered for them was completey by chance and it did'nt cost a penny. We took him on a visit to the coast and after a few more visits and dips in the sea they completey disappeared due to the salty water, and he had a lot of enjoyment out of it at the same time. Harvey had the same infection but not as bad as Buster and we dealt with it in the same way. If you dont live near the coast then this is not much help, but a bowl of warm water with a large amount of salt should give the same result but not as much fun for your dog.
All the best and good luck Phil
